Social Skills Training Document

The befriender will also act as a social mentor to the student with Asperger Syndrome. During the initial meeting, the befriender will be provided a document that contains information about areas that students with AS may struggle with. The document will also contrain recommendations about how befrienders should be able help them overcome their difficulties. These will involve:

Struggling to make eye contact and conversation

- The student may not be able to hold prolonged conversations. The befriender will try to help him out by being non-jugemental and practice having conversations and taking turns in conversation.

Meeting and interaction with people the opposite sex

- The befriender will talk to the student regarding the appropriate rules to show interest to a potential date, how to talk (eg. body language, eye contact) and how to tell if someone is interested in them or if someone is just being kind. The befriender might tag along to a social event with a student eg. a society where he/she will observe how the student interacts with others and gives feedback.

Social faux pas:

The befriender will explain what topics are appropriate and inappropriate to talk about. He will explain body language, jokes, banter etc.
